Adenocarcinoma of the colon rarely goes to bones or brain.
It goes to lymph nodes, liver, and lungs.
They are usually not conscious when they die.

Admin answers:

The doctor has suggested radiation to help your uncle feel more comfortable, he would not have offered this treatment if he did not think that it would be somewhat effective. Radiation therapy has some side effects, including a skin reaction similar to a sunburn, and fatigue. Considering that the cancer has spread to distant parts of his body, he is, unfortunately, nearing the end. He (and your family) needs to weigh the importance of the treatmet and his quality of life with his desire to go to the hospital for treatments every day.

I always thought cancer was all the same and should all have the same urgency to be treated. What makes breast cancer more important than all other forms?

Admin answers:

There are many different kinds of cancer and they all need different types of treatment. Men usually don’t develop prostate cancer until they are over the age of 45 but there are exceptions. Breast cancer strikes women as almost any age and is thought to be hormone related. There’s presently a big controversy over when women should get a mammogram to detect breast cancer but IMO the sooner the better since it can be very deadly. Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer inmost cases but still there’s the exceptions.

Admin answers:

Occasionally, breast cancer presents as metastatic disease, that is, cancer that has spread beyond the original organ. Metastatic breast cancer will cause symptoms that depend on the location of metastasis. More common sites of metastasis include bone, liver, lung and brain. Unexplained weight loss can occasionally herald an occult breast cancer, as can symptoms of fevers or chills. Bone or joint pains can sometimes be manifestations of metastatic breast cancer, as can jaundice or neurological symptoms. These symptoms are “non-specific,” meaning they can also be manifestations of many other illnesses.

Most symptoms of breast disorder do not turn out to represent underlying breast cancer. Benign breast diseases such as mastitis and fibroadenoma of the breast are more common causes of breast disorder symptoms. The appearance of a new symptom should be taken seriously by both patients and their doctors, because of the possibility of an underlying breast cancer at almost any age.

My niece owns her own store and she always donates 10% to cancer research. Especially breast cancer since she’s a survivor. However, she uses the pink ribbon which is the American Cancer Society’s logo. So anyone using that, has to have permission. If they are selling products and telling you they are for cancer research but you see no evidence of it, don’t go there and report them because they are falsely advertising. They have no right selling breast cancer bracelets without the permission of the ACS. Check it out. Something is fishy there.

Dave darling, I am so terribly sorry you are having to go through this, i have been through it myself and I know just how you are feeling, the shock, the grief, the worry!

Is your mum jaundiced at all? One of the more common cancers of the pancreas is head of pancreas which makes the patient yellow. If this burning is the only symptom she is experiencing, I am thinking that the chances are equally likely to be pancreatitis which is inflammation of the pancreas and not cancer at all.

Pancreatic cancer CAN be removed as long as it hasn’t spread to surrounding organs or lymph nodes.

Please if you are able to remember with all that you have on your mind, could you possibly email me and let me know the results next week? I am so concerned for you. It is equally possible that it is not cancer sweetheart, there is nothing in what you describe which makes me think that it definitely is.

My thoughts and prayers will be winging their way to you and your mum..

Admin answers:

Please go. I was your age when I started having symptoms, and only 20 when I was diagnosed. I avoided going to the doctor for so long because I was too embarrassed, and I ended up being forced to go when I was in so much pain. By that stage it was advanced.

So please just go and forget about the embarrassment factor. Doctors see everything, so they will be used to it.

But pls listen to this carefully. It is most likely, that because of your age, you will be fobbed off, and they will say it’s nothing. If they say it is hemorrhoids, ask for medication for it, and if after a couple of weeks you still have those symptoms, go back, and keep going back until they know what the problem is and it is resolved. The only reason I kept going back is because of the pain, and each time I was told something different, until eventually they did tests.

Admin answers:

I don’t want to sound mean or scare you anymore than you already are, but you REALLY need to talk to her doctor. Colon cancer patients usually have surgery even if it will not cure them and they are not candidates for chemo or radiation. This is because you run the risk of the patient becoming obstructed or the cancer perforating the colon wall. Not having all the facts I tend to think the doctors believe she will expire before she will become obstructed or perforate. This means she only has a few weeks at most. I am so sorry.

This might sound extremely silly to some who read it, but I lost my father to another type of cancer when I was only 6 years old in 1968. While they looked nothing alike I made a substitute father for myself in my imagination and that man was Michael Landon. I watched Bonanza until it went off the air, followed that with Little House and from there Highway To Heaven. Like my father, he was kind, giving, loving and just a down to earth decent person and also like my father he suffered through and survived a horrific youth. Both took that and instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they made their dreams come true (my father was a doctor, Michael Landon a high school and college athlete before becoming an actor). My children were at their grandmother’s, my husband was at work and I was coming down the stairs with a basket of laundry when I heard on the news that Michael Landon had passed away on July 1, 1991. I sat on those on stairs and wept without shame for hours, because I’d just lost my father all over again. I’ll never forget the date of either’s death and I miss them both to this day.

Breast Cancer?

I have lumps in both of my breasts. Could I have breast cancer at age 11?

Admin answers:

Every young woman gets lumps in her breasts at some point or another. This is very normal.

Check out these sites for information directed at teens regarding breast lumps.

“At puberty it is much more likely that your hard, painful lumps are simple cysts that can occur due to the hormone changes related to your menstrual cycle. These harmless cysts will usually get smaller after your period and resolve by themselves within several months. If they do not get smaller and go away within 3 months, then make an appointment with your doctor for a checkup. Don’t hesitate to ask your health provider any questions you have about the lumps or any other concerns about your growth and development.”

http://www.teengrowth.com/index.cfm?action=info_advice&ID_Advice=48955&category=body&catdesc=Body&subdesc=Breast

“Lumpy breasts are very common in girls and women. In most cases, breast lumps are not a sign of breast cancer. Teenagers, both girls and boys, will often feel a lump called an “adolescent nodule.” An adolescent nodule is a sore, swollen spot just under the nipple that will go away without any medical intervention. Although breast cancer is very rare in teens, anytime you feel a lump it’s a good idea to have it checked by your health care provider.”

http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/breasthealth/l/aa042402a.htm

” If you have not yet had your first period, then the lump could be a breast “bud” that marks the beginning of puberty. Breast buds keep growing and develop into full breasts over several years. If you have already started your periods, then a lump in the breast is usually a simple cyst. This is a breast duct that has temporarily plugged up with fluid, and it will resolve by itself in two or three months. A cyst may be painful, but it is harmless. Occasionally a breast lump will be a mass of solid fibrous tissue called a “fibroadenoma,” which is also benign (harmless), but it may not go away by itself. We recommend that you have the breast lump checked by your doctor. Depending on the size and feel of it, your doctor may decide to observe it over a couple of months to see if it goes away. If it lasts more that three months, then you may need further evaluation (such as an ultrasound test or an aspiration of the fluid.) In any case, rest assured that almost all breast lumps in teenagers are harmless. Breast cancer almost never occurs in teenagers.”

affects women of all ages even young teens. please educate yourself now! possibly save your own or someone you love’s life.

Odd you should mention this topic, Rebecca, ’cause just this week I received an email with a video about inflammatory breast cancer. I forwarded it to many of my friends and then deleted it. Now I wish I still had it to send to you. It was very interesting and also quite upsetting. Thanks for bringing the subject to our attention! I’d never heard of it prior to receiving the email!

Bright Red like its fresh? If so, then it is from the lower part of your tract, probably the sphinctor or rectum. Could be from hemorhoids, straining to hard, or having a large/hard bowel that tears the rectum.

Dark Red/Black blood is usually from the upper part of the tract. This could be caused by anything from cancer, ulcers anywhere from your stomach through your intestines, or other things.

Blood is never good, and black is worse. I would go to a doc.

DeniseDDS and Tarkarri have good answers and reasonable guesses, but this is always a guess.
Whatever guess even knowledgeable medical people may make will be wrong.
You do not know what stage she is, so Denise has to guess at that.
These questions asking us to predict the future are human nature.
Many of us want to know the future. We cannot ever know the future.
If you think about it, you might not want to know the future.
I saw one person – who would not allow any treatment – live for over five years with a huge primary breast cancer that had broken through the skin of the breast, became infected, was a painful fungating malodorous mass, and yet she would allow no surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. She had no money and no insurance. I saw her at no charge and provided her with comfort medications at my own expense. Nice person, but I could never talk her into allowing any real treatment. She was still alive and ambulatory when I retired from medical practice.
This is just one anecdotal case, but it shows that anything may be possible.
Cancers follow no rules.
This was the only person – out of many many hundreds of breast cancer patients I saw – who I could not talk into trying some form of breast cancer treatment.

Survival rate depends on many things, including stage and treatments done.

Quality of life? Well, having your chest butchered up closes some doors in life and dictates some wardrobe choices, but a good attitude can make it not so bad.
